One of the most cost-effective methods to include solar energy collection in a building is a solar thermal collection system.

For the Natural Fusion home we have included flat-plate collectors which are a part of a pump-less system which heats water for the domestic hot water supply for the house and can provide supplementary heating for the living space if the outdoor temperatures are too low.

Because the system is pump-less there is no electricity used in the production of hot water from the sun’s energy. Also, the system controls itself and runs only when the sun is out.

The basic flow of the system is that the collectors absorb energy from the sun. This heats the water in the collectors. The hot water rises to the top of the system and passes through the passive “pump” unit. The water then flows down to the hot water tank and heats that water in the tank which can be used for domestic hot water supply. The cooled water then moves back to the collectors and the process starts again.
